Things That Have Snowball Fights in the Night
February 12, 2003

What a sight we all saw today after last night's wind storm. It snowed again. Monday was a three-incher. Beautiful sight. Snow lodged in all the tree nooks and crannies. Bushes were topped solidly like whipped cream had been applied to them. The temperatures rose above freezing and it melted a bit. Then it snowed again Tuesday. About two inches. All the snow that had been knocked out of the trees the day before by the sun, the birds, and the wind was back on the trees again. The temperature stayed colder so this newer snow didn't melt down much but the birds and wind did another good job of shaking the snow loose from the trees. Then we were advised of another winter advisory but this time it was just about blowing and drifing snow. That was supposed to start after midnight. If it came, we didn't notice because we went to bed at 11:00 and slept pretty soundly until 6:30 this morning.

Mysterious snowballsThe only sign that there was wind last night was when we noticed the tarp that covers Bill's car had blown half off. The wind had managed to slide the whole tarp neatly up onto the roof of the car. It was still covering the car from front to back but had shifted. When I went out to Wal-Mart in the afternoon, that's when I discovered an amazing sight.

The fields were full of snowballs, rolled up by the wind. It was eerie. My first thought was it looked like aliens had come down and had a snowball fight during the night. As you can see by the picture here, there are trails of blown snowballs all over the place. I had never seen anything like this before.

Snowballs in the cemeteryWhen I drove by a cemetery on my way to Wal-Mart, there were more snowballs strewn around on the smooth expanse of the plots. I could just envision that all the dead people had come up and had some fun. Makes me think of that song, The Zombie Jamboree, sung by Harry Belafonte:

"Back to back, belly to belly
I don’t give a damn, I done dead already
Oho, back to back, belly to belly
At the Zombie Jamboree."

I could put the rest of the words up here but they're pretty long. Here's a link to the whole song, The Zombie Jamboree. It's a bizarre but funny song.

Wind blown snowballLook how neatly rolled up like a rug the bigger snowballs are. There are little trails from where they start that get bigger as the ball gets bigger and then they just stop. Like someone was trying to make a snowball for a snowman and then they just lost interest.

Nature continues to amuse me.
