The Cave Days of My Life
February 18, 2003

These are the cave days of my life. These days when the sky is solid gray and I don't want to venture far from the fire pit (furnace). It was particularly brutal this weekend what with the President's Day storm dumping inordinate amounts on snow on the Midwest through to the east coast. Here in Ohio, we didn't get the 12-24 inches that they did further east. Now that would have been a sight to see.

No, we got some rain, freezing rain, and light flurries on Friday. On Saturday, we woke up to freezing rain, then snow that piled up an inch or two, and sleet. The library where Bill works closed its doors because of the ice on the streets. On Sunday, we woke up to freezing rain pelting the windows again and the library was closed for the day again. More snow started falling later in the afternoon. Sometimes it would be sleet and then it would be light snow. The only thing both of us wanted to do was perch on our computer chairs all day and while away the time doing our various computer machinations. Me monkey-wrenching with Paint Shop Pro and Him wrestling with his blogger template and transferring it all to his own server. I kept the candle lit by my computer all weekend. We don't have a burnable fireplace so I had to make do with a small flickering candle flame.

When we went to bed Sunday night, we noticed that the snow was coming down thick and steady. On Monday morning, we woke to find four inches of snow had fallen overnight and it was still snowing but just lightly. There had been no word that the library would be closed for a third day so Bill went into his regular get-ready-for-work routine. He doesn't work weekends so the library closings didn't affect him. He had been hoping for a third closing but no such luck.

I've been just like a big ole sleepy bear wanting to hibernate in my den over these past three days. I haven't been sleepy so much as I've been unenthused about everything, unmotivated. Good thing I'm addicted to this computer or I probably would have gone stir crazy. I've been using Paint Shop Pro to make frames for paintings for The Sims game and to make walls and floors. At least there's been some creativity going on even if the house hasn't been getting cleaned.

But it's the sameness of the gray days and no fresh air being able to circulate through the house that gets to me. Being a stay-at-home empty nester, one day is pretty much a continuation of the day before with me waiting here for something to pop up to go to. Like this Saturday. There will be a staff appreciation dinner. I guess you could call it that. Awards will be given out to the outstanding librarians for the past year.

Then it's back home to the computers. Seems like life is a distraction from our real focus--computer fascination.
