The Winter That Won't Quit
February 23, 2003

We are having a real winter this year for the first time in decades. Every two or three days more white stuff falls from the sky. We have a bit of melting down and then more falls. We aren't getting the knee buckling amounts that they are further east but we are getting one, two, or three inches in increments. There's another one on its way tonight.

He found us againHere are the fruits of the last snow we got. The one over President's Day weekend. I don't know how he manages to find us every time we move but he does. The snow falls, it melts a bit, and then one day I look out and there is Snowbear looking in the window at me.

Well, actually, I'm going to give the secret away right here and now. This is Bill's specialty. Of course, who else but the man who's trademark is a bear? This year it about did him in, though. No, not the physical part of it, the asthma part of it. So, I'm not so sure that Snowbear will find his way here next year.

This year Bill also tried a new technique in making the snowbear. He figured that it would be less effort to pack a small trashcan full of snow, using a snow shovel to fill it, than to push a big, heavy wet ball of snow around on the ground. He was right. It was lots easier.

New ways to make a snowbearKaboodle always has to see what 's going on. She sat on the top of the file cabinet and steadily watched Bill as he scooped and built Snowbear. I don't know where Dusky was. I was sitting cozily inside at my computer taking pictures at appropriate times.

Then comes the guessing game, wondering how long Snowbear will stay around. We had five or six days of hard weather, then Bill built Snowbear, and the next day was one of the brightest, sunniest days ever. And Snowbear started slumping. We think he was depressed because he felt his time to depart was near. We got a dusting of snow the next day and no sun so Snowbear perked up a bit. His head still hung but he hung in there. Then the temperature warmed up to 40 degrees the next day and the slow dissolving began more earnestly. It took a couple of days before his head fell to the ground. We think he was contemplating his navel too heartily. He's still out there but headless and a lot thinner. I'll spare you the depressing spectacle.

Cat intent on watching Bill's labor

Oh, Snowbear he come
When the deep snow falls
Looking for us
He silently calls.

Quietly creeping
To the window he spies
The couple he seeks
When the white stuff flies.

Faithfully watching
Our lives inside
Knowing too soon
He'll go back and hide.

Till next year, buddy...
