| Is there really nothing going on in my life or is it that things are too good and I don't have time to write? I guess it's a bit of both. We are just plowing right through winter this year. I don't know about anyone else but to me the days are flying by. Well, my husband seems to feel the same way and my daughter. They've noticed. It's kinda scary how fast the days are going. Does that mean we are having too much fun? Do you realize that we are eight days away from the first day of spring? That fact hit me today as I was looking out the window at our water swamped yard from all the rain we've had the past three days. And the weatherman is calling for 73 degrees F tomorrow plus more rain. We had 1.87 inches since midnight and more is falling right now with a thunderstorm in progress.
Had to put up this picture. It's a very rare sight to see these two sitting beside each other like this. To be this close contentedly. It didn't last long, though. Dusky, on the left, finally noticed that Kaboodle, on the right, had encroached upon his space and gave her the evil eye. It works every time and she got down before he put out a gentle pat of warning. I captured a nice moment while I could. They like to sit on top of my lightbox when I have it on because it's so warm up there from the heat of the lights.
It must be almost spring because I heard a lot of birds out there this morning trying on their new courting songs. There are flocks of robins migrating through the yards and the cardinals have been in the treetops serenading the world for a week or two. I've seen three squirrels trailing intently behind one squirrel up and down the tree trunks. It would be a safe bet to say that the lead squirrel is a female. The birds are starting to court. I head a titmouse's courting song today. He stood up as tall as he could and let loose with a trill I hadn't heard before from their likes. I looked around the tree and, sure enough, there was a female titmouse on another branch. There's one chickadee that keeps being followed by three others. It's little signs like that that are getting me into a spring-is-here-winter-gloom-has-lifted mood. Signs of spring also include the tulips that are already pushing their green tops out of the soil down below the deck. Well, this weather has been quite warm this month and I think they are confused. It's more like we are into the April showers phase of this year while it's only March. Ah, and I saw the chipmunk that lives in the woodpile again. I hadn't seen him for months and I was so afraid that the black cat with the blue collar had snatched him for a snack. I think that cat has managed to snare at least one squirrel from the yard. The population seems down one or two. I saw a squirrel being chased by that cat a couple of days ago. It was some race and the squirrel almost lost it several times but he finally zipped through the fence and the cat couldn't follow. I would have been very sad if I had seen the cat come up the winner. Now some people would be glad to see a few squirrels go down but not me. They are very clever creatures. I wish I could be as persistent as they are and as good at problem solving. Today a couple of squirrels found out that if they walked across the iron I-beam that supports the deck they could just make the jump under the baffle that's on top the hanging bird feeder. Bill scared them off twice and then lowered the feeder so the baffle would block their jump. Hopefully. I think that now it's too close to the ground and they'll just experiment with jumping up next. We'll see. I threw out an ear of dried corn for them to make up for spoiling their sunflower feast. The corn lasted about half an hour and they were eyeing the feeder again. |
