It's a conspiracy, I'll tell ya. A conspiracy to make me eternally keep these older raccoons. Marge isn't happy. I am invading her territory when I go into that cage and she lets me know it. The raccoons are fine and frisky now after all that sickness. Goldie was the only one that didn't get sick from it but she had antibiotics pumped into her from the two shots she got from the vet for her ear mites plus she licked up the leftover formula/medicine gruel that the others didn't want to touch. So, I set a date for release--last Friday--so that my husband would be home in the evening to help carry cat carriers and a bag of dog food out to the creek at the nature preserve where we're going to let them free. And what does it to? Rains. And rains on Saturday. And rains on Sunday. And rains on Monday. And rains evem more on Tuesday--which is today.
There was a bit of a break in the rain yesterday so Bill and I went out and checked out Bunny Heaven, as we call the release place because that is where we let the bunnies go that I had rehabbed in April. The creek was running a bit high and that rather concerned me. My coonies don't have experience with a creek and I surely don't want any of them getting caught in swiftly running water and drown. I'm sure that they will pick up on how to swim pretty quickly but...
Please, Mother Nature, dry up. Let me let these critters go. They are champing at the bit and that's not good for your creatures either. Plus, it IS NOT pleasant going out there to that muddy cage to feed them. Note the picture on the right for an example of how much fun it is. Cheyenne likes to get on my shoulders and tug my ponytail holder out of my hair so then my hair gets all in my way as I'm bending down to fill their feed bowls. My hands and hair were too muddy to put it the holder back in this time while I was out there. Okay, gotta go for now and try to get breakfast in them in between downpours. It is just drizzling right now, it slowed down while I was writing this, but more is on the way. Hoo boy. |
